Young Carers

Young Carers are Children and Young People under the age of eighteen whose lives are in some way restricted because of the need to take responsibility for a person who is ill, has a disability, is elderly, is experiencing mental distress, is affected by substance use, or has HIV/AIDS. WHO ARE YOUNG CARERS?
Young Carers could be in any family. They may be taking responsibility for a parent, grandparent, sibling or other family member. Some may be primary care givers whilst others may take on responsibilities alongside other family members.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR THE PROJECT ?
The young Carer must live in the Cynon Valley. They must know and want to be referred. Referrals can be made by any agency or organization, by the Young Carer themselves, or by a family member. Referrals will only be accepted if they have been discussed and agreed with the Young Carer beforehand. Confidentiality is guaranteed unless the Young Carer or others are at risk.

WHAT DO YOUNG CARERS DO?     
Young Carers are generally involved in a wide range of caring tasks and responsibilities:
Physical Care
Practical Care
Personal Care
Medical Care
Household /Family Responsibilities
Emotional Responsibilities

YOUNG CARERS HAVE TO GROW UP FAST
Young Carers have grown up fast and often miss out on their childhood and adolescent years. They should be able to make informed choices about their situation with support and alternatives.
